My Favorite Ice Cream Summer Memory

I think right now it would be going to the Tastee Freeze with my friends. One of my best friends is back in the area where we grew up back in the 70s and I was thinking today about how we would pile into his family station wagon and drive out to the west end of Peru, Illinois to the Tastee Freeze for a banana split.

This was a time before there were Dairy Queen’s, at least in the Illinois Valley. Almost every town had a Tastee Freeze. There was the one on the west end of Peru and another one in Spring Valley.

Even John Mellencamp sang about one.

Sucking on a chili dog outside a Dairy Queen just doesn’t have the same ring to it.

I grew up in Spring Valley in the 50’s and 60’s and lived 2 blocks from the Spring Valley Tastee-Freeze. It was a great summer ritual to walk to the tastee freeze at night with family or friends and get a 10-cent cone…the 25-cent cones were huge and were only allowed for special occasions like birthdays. It was and still is great ice cream. I’m 56 and my girls still “make me” stop here whenever we come back to SV… I would even if they didn’t ask! Love the chocolate malts!!

I also remember going to that same Tastee Freeze back in the 60s. I remember stopping there with my grandparents on the way back to Cherry.

Say what you will about Dairy Queens, Baskin Robbins…but going to the Tastee Freeze rocked!

What was the name of that famous ice cream shop in Ladd?
